On Sunday, May 31st 2009, 29 players came out
to Skyline Billiards in Brooklyn, NY for Blaze Tour stop #14
of the season. A very tough field of players including Manny
Chau, Joey Testa, Matt Krah, Mike Miller, "Ginky"
George San Souci, Mike Fingers, Eddie Abraham, Shaun Wilkie
and Scotty Townsend.
This killer field was again dominated by "Jersey Joey"
Joey Testa, who currently holds the #3 spot on the Blaze Tour
leader board. Testa landed his spot in the hot seat via victories
over Mark Horn (7-1), Huey Moy (7-2), Alex Gilvary (7-3), and
finally a 7-0 win over Mhet Vergara which guaranteed him a spot
in the finals.
However, there were a number of top name players fighting back
on the one-loss side to match back up with Testa on Sunday evening.
For one, veteran player Huey Moy was looking to get vengeance
over his loss to Testa in the 3rd-round on the winner's side.
He made a strong return to take out George San Souci 7-6, Scotty
Townsend (7-6), and Matt Krah (7-4), but would fall to Manny
Chau 7-4.
Chau was also looking to return from the one-loss side to take
a swing at Testa, and would earn that chance after defeating
Mhet Vergara in the semifinals, 7-4. In this match, Mhet was
up 3-1 and missed a 7-ball to go up 4-1... and Chau battled
back to go up 6-4.
In the finals, (which was a true double-elimination) Joey went
up 6-4 when he chose to go for a tough 5-9 combo, leaving Manny
with the run. Joey made an unbelievable shot on the one ball,
but left himself a little straight on the two ball. Joey attempted
to bank the 4 ball but came short, leaving Manny a shot to tie
up the set 6-6. Manny made a great 4-9 carom shot forcing a
"Hill-Hill" Final Battle.
In the final game of the first set... Manny made the one ball,
and looked to come back to win the first set but missed the
two ball leaving Joey with an open table for the win.
